Brand new apprentice: A person wishing to become an apprentice must first complete an application for the apprenticeship program and submit it to the nearest Apprenticeship Training Center. He or she is then placed on a "waiting list" to be called for orientation and employment. Once he or she completes the orientation and paperwork at the Training Center, he or she is then enrolled in the Pre-Apprenticeship Program. The Pre-Apprenticeship program lasts for nine weeks. Once the program is successfully completed, the apprentice is sent to the local union office to apply for membership. The total cost to join the Union is $54.00, which is the first three months of union dues paid upon initial application. There is no initiation fee for new members at this time. NOTE: There are exceptions to this procedure. Please contact our Apprenticeship Committee at (408) 778-1552 for further information. Journeyman: Generally, a person with many years of experience in the carpentry trade may be eligible to join the union as a journeyman. There are two ways to become a union journeyman: 1. A signatory contractor states in writing to the Union that it wishes to employ that person as a journeyman. 2. Applicant to interview with a union field representative who will then determine if the applicant has the qualifications to be a union journeyman. Rejoining members: Please contact the local union's business office at (408) 269-7316 for information.
